This poem and painting are both titled Aloe, Snake, Cactus and represent a choice I once had to make. Difficult choices often present themselves within our lives in the form of other people; the person who doesn't come face to face with difficult choices is a privileged person indeed.
I have made many difficult choices in my short lifetime, but each one has landed me one foot closer to my goal. This particular poem and painting are themed around love. The desert is the mind while the cactus is a representation of the choice that I made.
The choice represented in this painting was made for love, but occasionally difficult choices tend to be the wrong one. The boy I wrote this poem for is gone now, along with the other two men who riddled several moths of my life with confusions. Still, choices bare consequences, and It was I who ended up alone like a cactus in the desert.
Never fear a difficult choice, because - regardless of the outcome - you made the decision to move forward.

Aloe, Snake, Cactus
|
An aloe to cure my burns, a snake to poison my blood, and a cactus, bold and blue, erected in the sky near the paint brushed sun.
A boy, prickly too, emerges on the scene, but the snake distracts and charms, and the aloe cleanses much of my distance. Is it the Aloe, Snake, or Cactus? Which one is solid, firm, and true? The sun paints many clouds tomorrow, but the silver lining is visible in your eyes; just above the pink flower that once rested on top. -Ed Toddy |
